Adults have a self-concept of being responsible for their own decisions, for their own lives. Once they have arrived at that self-concept, they develop a deep psychological need to be seen by others and treated by others as being capable of self-direction. They resent and resist situations in which they feel others are imposing their wills on them.8

One of the most significant changes that technology has enabled over the past several years is that we now have so many opportunities for being self-directed learners. In the lifelong learning market as I define it in this book, customers actively embrace that opportunity by making the choice to engage in educational activities (as opposed to participating in mandated training or education, as often is the case in the corporate setting and nearly always is in the K–12 setting). This choice—and the sense of responsibility it implies—should be extended into the learning experience. Making learning active, as covered in the last section, is one way to promote participation and share the responsibility for learning with the learner. Another is to provide as many avenues as possible for the learners to shape learning objectives to increase the relevance of those objectives. A powerful aspect of each of the models for learning I covered in Chapter 3 is that they allow for significant interaction with and among learners, and the feedback gained in this process can shape the course of the experience. Achieving this dynamic in purely self-study situations is much more difficult, but seeking learner input in advance, including through methods already covered in this book, is one important approach, as is providing opportunities for learners to apply knowledge and skills in the contexts that are relevant to them. Even something as simple as a checklist of meaningful “to-do’s” to take back to the office can go a long way in supporting this goal.
